Value Village Style Post #1

Value Village contacted me recently to ask if I would be interested in shopping their stores and blogging my outfits, sort of a "Fashion Ambassador." Um, are you kidding? Heck yeah! Full disclosure: they sent me a generous gift card for my effort, but I've been a fan of the store for years, so I couldn't wait to get started. Within weeks I had hit every location in a 25 mile radius of my house. I am a professional thrifter after all.

Week #1 is a casual but bold bohemian outfit with a rust colored corduroy jacket as the centerpiece. The jacket is labeled Merona (sold at Target), it's in very good shape, and cost me $11.99. It's perfect for a day like today where there's sun, but a chilly breeze as well.

The top is by H&M and cost me $5.99 at Value Village. I love the sheer fabric and the v-neck button detail - great for layering. The dark wash jeans are Levi's Vintage Boot Cut 565's and they were practically brand new for $11.99. I've always had good luck with Levi's, and this pair will get some heavy rotation. 

Everything else was incorporated from my current wardrobe: the vintage wooden bead belt, the drugstore sunglasses and my go-to necklace refashioned from several thrift store belts and broken chains.

Saturday Market Dress boho collection featured at Locavore

As part of the Locavore event on Saturday, I was invited to show 4 pieces from my current collection, so I threw together an earthy palette of animal, abstracts and geometric prints... and of course, one in all black. Thanks to Jonathan P. Beck for the photos!

Locavore ... the big reveal

Locavore happened last Saturday. It was such an inspiring and creative event, I can't believe I've been able to restrain myself from posting these images until now. Carlynne is such a graceful and lovely model, I'm absolutely in love with all the photos I took of her... but I truly attempted to narrow it down, I promise.

Introducing the Saturday Market Dress

The trunk show last Friday was a ton of fun - thanks to everyone who came out to Frock Shop! There are a dozen Saturday Market Dresses looking for a home now. I'll be dropping off a dozen per month all summer long, trying out variations on the design: cap sleeves, sleeveless, with pockets, maybe some silks?  Check 'em out!

Adrienne Antonson's State by Nube Green

However brief the actual runway show (I think it was under 10 minutes), last Friday I enjoyed a glimpse into the creative world of State by Nube Green, designed by Adrienne Antonson.

The whole event was home grown in a really great way. The event was produced by Nube Green, the hip and conscious recycled art and gift store, and took place on the stage of Century Ballroom, the swingingest place in Seattle to dance and dine, both housed in the historic Oddfellows buidling. The models were pulled from other local businesses including Molly Moon's ice cream scoppers, Oddfellows Cafe cocktail servers and Nube Green's shopgirls. Makes you feel like you live in a small town.

Friday night I'll be at the Grand Ballroom witnessing the launch of Nube Green's State spring/summer collection. They're calling it an "oddly inspired" runway show. "Layered with tees and totes from our Oddfellos Building friends, modeled by your favorite Molly' Moon's ice cream scoopers, Oddfellows Cafe cocktailers and Nube Green shop girls." This thing is going to be so hip that the hipsters will have to leave halfway through the show due to the throngs of admirers from the main stream. Get your ridiculously cheap ticket here. 

If you aren't familiar with Nube Green, check out their website and then add it to your must-visit list. Talk about the motherlode of recycled goods. But don't be fooled - you won't find the everyday craft items here, everything in the store is a work of art. Some of the most talented eco designers are sold at Nube Green. I've been coveting this reclaimed wood bed since they opened.

closet redux

Since announcing my 2012 Wardrobe Resolution, I hadn't taken many steps toward accomplishing my goal, unless you call selling a few pairs of shoes on eBay a tiny step. Little did I know my husband was planning to install a closet system in our master bedroom (we've been renovating for 9 years and we're finally down to just the details).

There's nothing like a fancy new wood slat and metal closet system to make a girl question her clothing choices. Did I really want my favorite Rachel Roy dress hanging next to the outdated "dress-I-throw-on-when-I'm-in-a-hurry" or the various items that don't fit me anymore that I haven't gotten around to replacing? Talk about motivation!

Here's an embarrassing, cluttered, messy before photo.

The first thing we did was remove EVERYTHING and tear out the bowed wooden rod and swayed shelving unit. 

In just one weekend we transformed our cluttered master closet into a sleek, organized wardrobe. We chose the ventilated wood slat closet system in cappuccino, designed and sold through Lowe's called Allan + Roth. These systems are great because you can mix and match the pieces to really customize it for yourself.

And the best part? I tried on every piece of clothing before it went back in the closet. Many pieces I thought were OK just looked outdated and blah when I tried them on. I ended up with about 50 pieces of clothing and 20 pairs of shoes that I took to Armadillo Consignment. I also had about 15 items that went to Goodwill, and a couple of things I just decided to cut up and use as raw material.

As a celebration of my disciplined approach to the net zero wardrobe, I actually did buy a few new pieces. I found a couple of great Simply Vera Wang pieces on the clearance rack along with a colorful pair of platforms by Candies at Kohls. And at Forever XXI I found a boho long sleeved top and one of those great high-low hem skirts that I've had my eye on for weeks. But we're talking maybe 7 new items in exchange for the 70 items given away. At this rate, I really will be at net zero by the end of the year!
