More PR press!

SHLmag

Seattle Homes & Lifestyle magazine has a mention of our Product Runway win and a photo of the moment of truth in the July/August print issue!  It is listed online under the Spring Happenings section as well.

Product Runway - celebrity judges

I think one of the highlights of the evening last Friday was meeting my new BFF, Jack Mackenroth.  He was genuine and funny and candid about our carpet garment and Project Runway and everything.  It was truly a thrill.  Thanks, Jack!  although I'm told we owe the win to Angela Adams and Matt Lorenz...

Product Runway - We Won!

what a fantastic night!  we crossed our fingers just to get in the top 6 and we did!  Lindsey and I walked out on the runway with Monica and defended our garment to the judges, then they started to eliminate teams... somehow we just kept standing on the runway while the other teams were asked to leave...  It was such a victory!  here are some photos from the event.

PR: finish line!

Img_6598 Img_6597I'm really pleased with how the jacket turned out.
Img_6591 the machinery gear pieces really added to the collar.  I hope we don't get marked down for the amount of glue I used on the jacket, but it was essential for solidifying the construction.

if I had the chance to make the skirt over again, with what I know, I'd do a better job, but for what it is, I'm willing to send it down the runway and take my chances.  after seeing the corset that jennifer worked on, I had the idea to add the stitch motif into the skirt to tie them together, but with the time constraints I decided against it.  Img_6570

on the other hand, I took the time to create a custom clothing label for the jacket, which arguably was not essential to the competition.

PR: the home stretch

two days left to sew or glue or tweak the outfit... 6 days till the runway show!

PR: knit one, purl two

the sleeves are really making the whole jacket come together.  I only have one done, but I was smart enough to write down the pattern as I went, so I can whip up another one pretty easily.  I think the decision to knit the sleeves from the rug yarn was a good departure from the secondary backing which was the original idea. Img_5432 it looks so much more like a real jacket!

PR: rug burns

our product partners in this crime of fashion are Bob & Diane of Atlas Carpet...  our gracious hosts invited Team Steam out to their home for some R&R Img_5322...and rug yarn winding.  part of our materials are these HUGE skeins of hot pink and copper yarn that I will use to crochet details on the skirt and knit sleeves for the jacket among other things, maybe boot laces... but they have to be wound into manageable portions.

Img_5338

Img_5331_2there was some healthy competition between the pinks and the copper winders, but the outcome was usable yarn for the good of the project.

PR: carpet strategies

you're never too old to ask your mom's advice.  I told her I was planning on using hot glue to finish the edges and fusible interfacing as a backing and just hoped it didn't unravel like the first attempt.  she suggested that I attach the interfacing before cutting the pieces out.  brilliant!  I spent 8 hours Friday and probably 6 hours Saturday and I think I've made some good progress.  there is finally some color on the skirt!

PR: bringing life

3 posts in a row about product runway might tell you how frequently this challenge is on my mind.  I added sleeves to the jacket and redesigned the collar... added a third bubble tier to the skirt (will i ever stop?  i love volume)... and i'm leaning towards 'happy' with the overall presentation, although there is still much work to do.  maybe it's good that Project Runway is over, so I can focus on something else.

If I can just get the bones of the pieces solid, the rest of the team has graciously offered to help with the details.  the main obstacle is an equation of (X = unfamiliar materials) multiplied by (Y = perfectionism).  you do the math.

PR: progress photos

our next deadline is a week away and we are required to submit progress photos.  we had a very productive meeting last night getting into the nitty gritty a little more which was very helpful.  I'd like to have the skirt structure done, if not start the crocheting, and at least the shape of the jacket lining and sleeves for the progress photo.  i've attached a couple of photos from the meeting to show the design coming to life.  bonus - one of the machine gears we received is a ring!

Img_5446 this image indicates the asymmetry of the collar, but it will actually be the pink carpet rather than this lining fabric turned inside out.

Img_5435 the beginning of the corset...

Img_5449 the flash washed out the ring a little but it's still a cool piece of existing machinery.
