Remnants of the Past Vintage Show + UrbanFarm Naturals

A few weeks ago my friend Tamila, owner of UrbanFarm Naturals and soap-stress extraordinaire, told me she was invited to the Remnants of the Past Vintage Show in San Luis Obispo, California. I am absolutely thrilled for her! These specialty vintage shows are a feast for the senses with amazingly creative vintage, antique, folk, farm and cottage themes. Each booth is a thing of beauty. Then Tamila asked me to make her a Saturday Market Dress, branded with her company's colors. Challenge accepted! 

UrbanFarm Naturals' branding combines rich hues of orange and yellow with chocolate brown, and to add some bohemian flair I incorporated this floral print. She added the orange leggings, and of course, just happened to have a vintage bicycle with potted plants in the basket available for the photo shoot.

I also created a tunic length version of the Saturday Market Dress, again branded in UrbanFarm Naturals colors, this time focusing on the play on orange and chocolate. This top is feminine yet functional with the shorter sleeves, and Tamila can wear it over a pair of skinny jeans while she's running around setting up her booth.

If you happen to live in the San Louis Obispo area, or if you're up for a road trip, consider stopping by the Alex Madonna Expo Center this weekend. The Remnants of the Past show runs Saturday, June 2nd from 9-5 and Sunday, June 3rd from 9-3.

You can also expect some special guests including Jo Packham, Creator and Editor in Chief of Where Women Create and Matthew Mead, a celebrity lifestyle and entertaining expert.

 

glam.spoon: recycle queen on King5 news

In case you missed it, I enjoyed 3 minutes of fame last night on King5 TV. Mimi Jung and her camera man followed me around the Lynnwood Goodwill a couple weeks ago, while I shopped for recycled textiles and offered thrift store tips. They even filmed me in my studio sewing up some ruffles.

 

 

 

Seattle Met Spring Fashion Video sneak peek

There's a lot to love about this video. The setting is an artist's home... and he just happens to live in an old church. The fashion is bright and colorful for spring. The fashionable Laura Cassidy, style editor of Seattle Met Magazine, expresses her love for the process of editorial fashion and the trends for spring 2012... and the fabulous Niko from Gene Juarez is glimpsed styling the models' hair. I've been a fan of Ms. Carter's (or is that Ms. Bonham Carter's?) since A Room with a View some hundred years ago and I actually love that she ends up on the worst dressed list a lot, because it just reminds me there is too much judgment in the world. She's a free spirit who dresses as she pleases and in my humble opinion, she always looks unique. Check out this photo shoot from the Russian Harper's Bazaar from December, 2011 that I just discovered. It's inspiring my spring collection!

Dress for Success Seattle at the YWCA Inspire Luncheon

The YWCA's 2012 Inspire Luncheons are underway! The first event featured the talented and charming Academy Award winner, Helen Hunt at Meydenbauer Center on March 15th. She shared very personal stories of the joy and challenges of raising a strong daughter. I still remember the luncheon I attended a couple of years ago with Gloria Steinem as the speaker. Talk about inspired.

The YWCA hosts 3 of these events each year, and the next one is scheduled for Tuesday, April 24th at the Washington State Convention Center with guest speaker Sheryl WuDunn, co-author of Half the Sky. If you have some time, watch the online video of her Ted Talk. It's an inspiring 18 minutes.

On behalf of Dress for Success and the YWCA, I encourage you to attend the event if you're so inclined, by registering to sit at the Dress for Success table. Dress for Success Seattle is a wonderful organization that helps women trying to get back on their feet and into the workforce. I've been supporting them for years through the Girls Gone Glam events and the Closet Treasures Sale. We all know how important it is to feel that you look your best and feel confident when interviewing for a job that could change your life.

fashion editorial: Jaime King in O Magazine

Take a look at a photo essay from the March issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, featuring model-actress Jaime King in a series of feminine, 1920s-inspired looks with a modern twist. I love the pairing of salmon, black and gray, and all the props and accessories. I might try to work some 1920's influence into my wardrobe. They were the first bohemians, after all.

2012 Inspire Luncheon with Helen Hunt

If you follow my blog you know that I've been volunteering with the YWCA since December. All my efforts in the development office have contributed to the main fundraising event(s) of the year, and on March 15th, the first of three Inspire Luncheons took place at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue. Thanks to our fearless leader, Jackie, the event went off without a hitch.

The centerpieces used on all the tables were baskets, donated by The Container Store, filled with useful personal and household products, donated by Bartell Drug Stores, then wrapped in mylar and tied with a ribbon at the top. The centerpieces will be used for display during the luncheons and then give to the YWCA's clients. I personally made over 200 of those tri-colored ribbons and participated in a work party to get 250 baskets put together. It was quite the operation!

We set the tables at Meydenbauer Center the night before the event, and everything came together nicely to create a warm, colorful ambiance.

Ms. Hunt was charming and funny, and shared very personal stories with the crowd. She described her heritage of strong, independent women and admitted that when she tells her young daughter she is a strong woman, it's mostly brainwashing. 

The luncheons have been happening for over 20 years now, but if you've never been to one, I highly recommend it. From the client stories to the guest speaker to the amazing energy in the room, you will be inspired.

You have two more opportunities this year! The Seattle Inspire Luncheon takes place on Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at the Washington State Convention Center with guest speaker, Sheryl WuDunn, Co-author of Half the Sky. There is a third and final luncheon on the year that happens in Snohomish County on Thursday, May 10, 2012 at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center in Everett with guest speaker, Ellen Goodman, Pulitzer Prize winning columnist.

The event tallied up just over $500,000 raised for the YWCA's programs that day!

Mila Kunis strikes a pose on Harper's Bazaar's April cover. Who knew that behind that dumb 70's Show character was a talented, smart and sexy ballerina? If that's not enough, in the interview she talks about what it’s like to be popular in Hollywood (among other topics).
